  • How can I capture HD in Adobe Premiere Pro?

    Hi,

I’m trying to capture HD through a Blackmagic Teranex 2D box in a 4:3 format for a client, but the settings in PP5 will only allow 16:9.

This is the only format I can select for HD:-
“For editing in Motion JPEG format with Blackmagic equipment.
    High Definition 1080 line, 50 fps video (16:9 progressive).48kHz 16 bit audio.”

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

HD is only 16×9. If you want 4×3 you’ll have to capture in SD. What are the specific requirements from your client?

Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply. I transfer cine film to DVD/digital format. I’m capturing from an MWA FlashSCAN8 machine, through a Blackmagic Teranex 2D box and into Premiere Pro 5. The client not only wants SD files, but also HD. Because the format of cine film is 4:3, PP5 keeps the 16:9 format and drops black pillars each side of the film. I think this is quite acceptable, but the client has asked for the HD to be supplied as a 4:3 file…

    Hi Bruce,

You need to make it quite clear to the client that HD video is ALWAYS, ALWAYS a widescreen 16:9 format and when converting 4:3 source to HD, it WILL be pillarboxed (black bars on sides). You might have an option to center-crop the upconversion, which will expand the 4:3 source to fill the 16:9 frame, but that further reduces quality and crops some of the original source frame as well…

    Thanks

Thanks for the very speedy response Jeff!

That is certainly some very good advice.

    All the best.
