How can I achieve this effect?
Posted by Dave Berninger on September 1, 2010 at 10:28 pmI need to make a PSA for a job interview and I really like what was done in this Cal Football promo. The main one I am curious about is the repeated image to text. It can be seen here
https://row27.com/TV-Commercials – Scroll down to “Saturday – California Football”
Thanks!

September 2, 2010 at 12:36 amYou can use the 3D Layer distributor script from https://www.aescripts.com to place the text layers in 3D Space.
Precomp these and use as a track matte for the video.

September 2, 2010 at 1:18 amI’m fairly new to AE. Could you go into a bit more detail of what you mean? Do I have to manually make a ton of text instances?

September 2, 2010 at 3:07 amBelieve they used multiple instances of Trapcodes Particular. Cut out a still of the frame they want to go from text to picture, this is the ‘layer comp’
Create a ‘text comp’ with your text. You don’t want this to be too large, say 250 x 150. You should make your text fill this comp.
Drag both into a new comp. Use particular and set the emmitter to your layer comp, the particulars to textured polygon and choose the text comp. For the first instance I used small particles(10) moving slowing(24). Set the particles at 96000 at frame 0 and 0 particles at frame 1. Set particle size to 100% random.
Duplicated the layer and changed the initial particles to 400, velocity to 60 and size to 25. Also turned on shading.
Finally you would add a couple of dissolves to cross dissolve between the layers. Throw everything in a new comp and play in reverse so the particles flow build the person.

September 2, 2010 at 3:08 amsorry forgot to post the picture. This is a frame from about halfway though the dissolve. Best I could do a few minutes before bed.

September 2, 2010 at 6:53 amHey John, thanks alot. I am still having a bit of trouble getting my text particles to take on the color they are spawned from. If I PM you my email address could you send me the AEP file? Thanks!

September 2, 2010 at 10:59 amBefore I do that, I just checked a couple of things and saw I either ommitted or told you the wrong thing(I was pretty tired last night).
On the emmitter, under Layer Emitter-make sure the Layer RGB Usage is set to RGB – Particle Color. Under Particle Type you want to choose Textured Polygon Colorize
If your still having problems…sure shoot me an PM and I’ll throw it up to an FTP and email you a link.
