How about a few “cow” reviews of the HVX from new users
How does it stand up to the 1/2″ and 2/3″ chip set standard def. cams. Love it, hate it, or what. I know that there are other forums that address this, however I would like to see a few of our very own “cow” reviews.

Also, we have a pipe that is comparable to 128 T-1 lines and a server backbone that could easily serve up footage files if people wish to have samples of footage, etc., to preview online.

Speaking as an EDITOR who has seen this footage side by side with the Varicam on a recent shoot, and watching it on a decent HD monitor, I can offer a few comments.
The image is a bit softer than that of the Varicam…not as sharp and crisp…and a touch grainier But that is to be expected, due to the smaller CCDs (half the size of the Varicam) and the lens (stock lens vs Fujinon). The Varicam has a GAIN setting of -6, so when used on exteriors it can produce a very clean image. The HVX only goes to 0, so it is a bit grainier.
That being said, the footage still intercuts VERY well. It took looking at a bigish HD monitor, to notice the differnce. But, also, people at home will have a big HDTV, so they might see it too….maybe. After the compression for satellite delivery it all might end up looking the same.
Very complex camera. I didn’t DARE touch the settings and menus…being an editor and not a DP for the past 12 years. For broadcast work I’d definately recommend it as a good B-camera solution…not really as an A-Camera. That still needs to be a Varicam, IMHO. But as a B-camera, it works very well with the varicam, much better than a DVX-100a works as a B-camera to a digibeta rig. The differences are minor.
And I too have some footage to share. My kids playing, but hey, it is something.

We have shot a few spots with the new HVX200. Since the footage must be distributed on BetaSP we opted to shoot DVCPRO50 24p. Results are nice. The camera requires a good bit of light. It’s a bit noisier that I would like. You must be very careful with exposure. Making setup adjustments helps but it is time consuming on a shoot and you must have a good field monitor. People shots are very pleasing because the colors are great!

But in this price range, do you think we will (could) see anything better? I guess only time will tell.
I know you talk about intercutting with the Varicam, but what if you’re only using the HVX200….will the client or viewer say, “hey that doesn’t look as good as it could”. I guess what I’m driving at is, if this was going to be your only camera, is it good enough.

The camera is only as good as your DP. Get a good DP, it will look golden. Get a bad DP and it will look like, well, what the bad DP gives you. The DP also needs to get to know the camera WELL. Shoot tests, see what settings work in what situations. It took my BRILLIANT DP 10 hours to set up the two HVX cameras to match the settings of his varicam. And we had TWO DAYS to get ready before the shoot.
Heck, you put a good DP behind a DV camera and you get good stuff.

hey scenecutter,
i’m planning on originating in dv50 and distributing finished shows in betacam sp. what type of workflow are you using?

We are shooting DVCpro50 and editing with FCP5. Then distribute on Beta SP using Decklink SP. The results are OK but I would like better. We will be getting a Kona LH to try the HD settings.
