House sync…genlock…what the?
Hi, I run a small post company with 2 HD suites (1x PC, 1x Mac) and I’ve always been able to make do with hooking up VTRs for recording and digitising (everything from Beta to HDCAM SR) avoiding using the ref input/output on the VTRs and my systems (1x Axio HD and 1x BMD Multibridge Pro2), by simply telling the VTRs (via their unique and convoluted menu systems!) to use a reference from the input/output signal. However, yesterday, I had some really serious issues with an HDW-2000P and after talking to an engineer from the hire firm, surmised that having some sort of ‘house’ sync or genlock was a better idea.
What I gathered (rightly or wrongly) was that I should have a device than produces a constant sync signal, and that this should supply all the BoBs attached to my systems (Axio HD and BMD) as well as any VTR I hire in and that this would provide me with a more robust way of ensuring material I lay-off to tape would be in rock solid sync. Is that it, or have I got totally the wrong end of the stick!?
With the current 12 hours of HDCAM lay-offs I’m still doing, I’m using the VTR to do an assemble edit from my Axio and experiencing the VTR dropping the PGM onto tape exactly on the mark (10:00:00:00, as per usual), except sometime, it wanders and drops it in at, say, 10:00:00:05, so whilst the a/v is in sync with itself, the whole PGM is 5 frames late, and I fear the tapes might get rejected by the broadcaster! So, would having some sort of sync device solve this?
Sorry if this is a really basic question – and I’m somewhat embarrassed to ask it after doing this for 10 years – but it’s something I’ve always known I should have, but never got round to asking before!
Any advice on makes, models, what to look for, pricing, etc would be very much appreciated! I’m guessing an AJA GEN10, or something similar would be what I need…but how and when should it be used?
Cheers,
Oli
