We are editing a project on a MacBook Pro with FCS2 and need to know if we can hot switch the new Matrox MXO2 in the Express slot? We need the slot to also ingest files from the Sony SxS memory cards shot with a Sony XDCam EX camera. After transferring the clips to a FW 800 drive connected to the MacBook, we then need to plug the MXO2 back in to edit with an external monitor, like a 42″ Plasma and maybe another 23″ monitor connected to the extra DVI out on the MacBook. We haven’t bought the MXO2 yet and do not want the older MXO.

To be safe I would close out final cut first.

Also, you may need to power down the MXO2 before you unplug it. I haven’t used it, but I have a eSATA card that requires that. Sometimes, I have to restart to get it to work right.

I haven’t used the MXO2, but I looked it up how the card mounts in their manual online. It works the same way as my eSATA card. Check out page 8 of the manual.

As I said, this isn’t a big deal, and it should work most of the time, but there is the possibility of needed to restart every so often to get it to mount properly.

So it’s less reliable than just mounting firewire drives, but probably not by much.

Usually when you insert an Express Card in to the MBP, you will get a little icon in the top right corner of your Mac (next to the clock). Simply select that and choose to safely eject the card. Do the same with your SXS cards. I haven’t used the MXO2 but I imagine it would operate in this way.
