It’s that time of year …..

I am wondering if anybody knows of a tutorial or technique for creating the following:

There is footage running when all of a sudden something begins to tear what appear to be five rips from an invisible claw through it from behind. Ripping the footage, as light rays spill through from behind until the gashes open up revealing the footage behind it.

I have seen this done in Horror film trailers. I have been experimenting with track mattes but can’t seem to get it right.

Thanks in advance for any clues or tips.

    Thanks,

i’d probably create the rips in illustrator… first creating a simple rip like shape, then go through the artistic brush types until i found one that got me close to what i was after. expand the brush shape and combine taht with the shape. duplicate that a to create the other slashes. if neede, i might take it into photoshop for further alterations.

once i had it the way i wanted it, i’d place it in a comp with a black background, use a simple, fast linear wipe to bring it on and cc light burst to create the light rays pouring through the rips. if you have trapcod’s shine, that might be even better for the light rays.
