Horrible playing on QT/SL
Posted by Rafael Amador on December 7, 2010 at 1:59 pmSince I’ve updated to SL, all my old H264/MP4 looks HORRIBLE.
There is banding and blocks where wasn’t on Leopard.
That happens on QT7 and QTX.
Also the player doesn’t finish properly when the clips are finished.
is only my self who is having this?

Hi Walter,
I don’t think is any Gamma related issue: I’ve been using Gamma 2.2 on Leopard since long and without any problem. What I see is pure 8b banding QT set to High Quality).
Some sunrise time-lapses that I was very satisfied about, now look better in Vimeo that on my MBP.
What used to be subtle gradients on the sky, now shows ugly bands. What used to be a clean plate (EX-1 recorded on NANO-Flash/100Mbps, Neat-Video, Color out on Prores HQ), now shows lot of compression noise.
I have another MBP with Leopard still installed.
I will try to post some screen shots.
Cheers,

December 8, 2010 at 2:16 amIs it only in Quicktime, or do other image applications show banding, too? Is it only on H.264 media, or are other formats affected?

December 9, 2010 at 6:10 pmHi Walter,
I’m far from home, so I can not make many tests.
I have only my (brand new) MBP17″.
I’m playing XDCAM (420&422) and some Prores clips too.
With this stuff I can’t honestly appreciate any difference.
On the H264, the quality drop is clear.
