Horizontal Lines in Full Screen Playback

That’s interlacing. Computer displays connected via computer connections cannot show interlacing properly.

The Preview and Program monitor drop one field when they play back, so you don’t see this.

YOu need an IO device outputting to an HDTV to see this properly. YOu can get a Decklink Mini Monitor (PCIe for tower or Thunderbolt connected) for $150.

It could be interlacing as Shane mentioned, but it could also be the horizontal tearing that has plagued Avid for years. That’s a result of refresh rates and computer screens. Launch Avid MC and type the “moncon off” command in the console. See if that fixes it. If so, you will need to re-enter this every time you launch MC, since it resets to the default when the program starts. I only suggest this because you mentioned FCP was fine. If it were interlacing, then I would think you’d see that same issue (with the same media) in FCP.

Hey Shane,

Thanks so much for your detailed response. I no longer have the problem. Like Oliver said, if I go to console and type “moncon off” it stops tearing.

That being said, it’s a little irritating. I like to “hide video” to the small composer windows and if I do that and put moncon off then I can’t have a “full screen playback”. I could go back and forth between modes but it’s a little cumbersome.

I’m interested in your decklink suggestion. I have a decklink intensity card with a couple of HDMI ports so maybe if I hook up another monitor to HMDI it will allow me to be in full screen with no tearing.

Anyway, it’s got me thinking. Thank man!
