Could be related to the problem with your media. I’d make the DVD in DVD Studio Pro. In Basic mode it’s pretty simple to use, not much more complicated than iDVD, and will produce good results even if you can’t work with Compressor.

I have just used Streamclip to convert the files to DV and it seems to do the trick. thanks again!

Thanks! I may or may not have found a loophole. Converting one clip and dragging it into the timeline makes all of the other clips work fine.
