Hopeful, then not
Reading these posts initially on the new release doesn’t make me want to convert my 6 edit suite studio to FCP X. I had high hopes that Apple would rock this release for us studio guys who regularly share media between edit bays. I cut all day on a project that lives on a different machine in our studio. Another editor cut all day on a different project on his computer with some assets on the same system I was cutting on. Worked perfectly and we did not know the other was slamming the drives.
Geez, do I actually have to give a second look at Premier and AVID?
Booking tickets to NAB to see what is shaking out in this very unstable editing environment.
I have never been more unsure of what my next step is…since 1994.

So all your media is shared, and you guys just mount shared drives? If that’s the case, X should work just fine. Essentially the only difference now between X and 7, is Libraries (Projects in 7) have to be on attached drives or SAN locations. But the media can be anywhere. We have all our media on a NAS, Libraries are local, works great.

lol… it’s a slow day today. 🙂 Might as well try to help.
I’ve actually been cutting in FCP 7 and Pr the last week or so to be compatible with some Luddite colleagues. It has reminded me how much I like X. 😉

i was confused myself before cioni and mestman told me fcpx was the future. Glad to see mestman smoothly stepping in with training and a company on the topic for the new year.
clarifies the issue as it were! :))
sure the market decides mate, and other people busily run carny training circuses in the meantime eh? 🙂

Theres a lot of talk about 10.1 being built from the ground up, so 10.1 is a bit more of a functional release. They would have had to rewrite a lot of the basic code to allow the change to libraries, which for me a a big step forward – and from what I understand will make sharing projects and media (especially in an environment such as yours) much easier.. Also like they fact that backups is right there as well.
And I like Snapshots – already used that one a few times.

I agree. While I like the performance enhancements to FCPX and the Library thing will end up being better than prior versions, I’m pretty bummed that there wasn’t some uber updates like Adobe did with 7.1. Still no mixer, fine then give us “Send to Logic”. Nothing that compels me to order a Mac Pro that’s for sure.
I’ll keep cooking with Premiere CC for now on both my PC and Mac until something better comes along.
