Hooking up a DAT to a G4 tower
I have a system at home which I try to tell people is DV input only. I have a client whi will give me a DAT machune to didgitize DATS into FCP4. I told him unless it has a firewire out, I cant hook it up to my G4 at home. Hee asked me if I could hook it up to the mic input. I saidd I ddidnt think that would work. I dont have any kind of advanced cards here at home. Is there a work around for this on my machine?

You can connect it to the MIC input if you buy a “Line-to-Mic-level” patch cord or adapter. (Drops the higher line-level output down to a mic-level).
Or you can connect the DAT to a camcorder with a line-level input and either record the DAT to DV tape first and capture the DV tape… or, if the camcorder will “transcode” from its input directly to the FireWire output, you could capture the DAT “live” thru the camcorder.
You could go to the computer store and buy a Griffin “iMic” ($30-$40) that converts stereo line (or Mic) sources to USB and the Mac can use the iMic as its audio input source. Bill the client for the cost of the iMic.
