Hook up External Drive and deck to laptop

Why not connect the deck to the FW400 port? The tearing may only be apparent on your computer display – it’s best not to make any picture analysis on the canvas itself it has no bearing on what you will actually see when you edit back to tape. Hook up a monitor to your deck and set up FCP to output to the deck while you edit.

I heard the firewire ports are on the same bus.
You should hook one of the externals through the card.
I’m just not sure what goes where.
Does the Deck go to the card or the Drive?

Firewire Drive to the FW800 port, Deck to the FW400 port.

The ‘tearing’ you’re seeing is normal, that’s a product of interlaced footage playing on a progressive computer screen. You must view your project on an external tv monitor to see the footage play correctly.

O.k. thanks. So my connections are correct. Drive to the 800fw port and Deck to the Card.
Now as you can tell- I’m new to FCP and laptop editing.
I have used a PC desktop Avid for the last few years. And still do. I just want to learn FCP for on the road edit jobs and an external monitor is not an option.
I must say I’m shocked that this “tearing” is considered normal.
Walter- you say it has to do with interlaced footage on a progressive screen- but my footage IS 24Pa from a Panasonic DVX.
But it was also shot with the anamorphic lens.
I did not see an option for 24Pa Anamorphic. There only seems to be the option for one or the other.
I find it hard to believe FCP users have been editing with this Tearing as normal.
