    Hi,

I’m deciding between 2 very different cameras, the Panasonic HMC150 (which is AVCHD and uses SD cards) and the HPX170 (which is DVCProHD and uses P2 cards). The thing holding me back from the HPX is the cost of P2 cards.

But I am wondering, if I were to save on card costs by shooting in 720p on the HPX (which, if I understand correctly, uses about half the space as 1080 when shooting in 24p) would that still result in better quality than shooting in 1080 on the HMC?

I didn’t see any other posts on this comparison, but if you know of any please point me towards them…

    Thanks!

What is your intended audience, and screen size?

Why I ask is this. The quality of my HMC 150, even in 720p, which I’ve read in reviews appears to be it’s ‘sweet spot’, is fabulous. My 720p video is just about every bit as great as my 1080. I’ve decided to shoot all future video I take at 720. However, here’s a thread comparing the two formats/cameras

I feel that my intended audience/screen size is video monitors, like home tvs, and smaller (iPods, etc.). I don’t intend to do any work for large screen production, and if I’m that lucky, I’ll rent a better camera. In the meantime, I’m saving money, getting fabulous HD format pictures, and feel like I’m not spending more than I need to. Do I know my camera’s limitation? Yep, but learning more everyday. Am I missing something?
