  • Hitting Delete key moves files in Timeline

Posted by Brian Mcfadden on July 29, 2008 at 6:53 am

I know this is probably simple but…Whenever I use the “delete” key to delete a clip from the timeline several other clips move with it and shift positions. Is there a preference setting or something that can change this? Using the “cut” command deletes the file but keeps everything else in the same place so I’ve taken to using that…It just would be easier to hit delete and not have everything on the right side of the timeline shift over.
    Thanks

Brian, in Apple world, you use backspace to delete things. In FCP, Delete does “ripple delete”, called extract edit in Avid. It automatically shifts all incoming clips to close the gap.

Use backspace to do the edit you want.

Or instead of delete key; right click on the clip and click on delete
from the menu…it will leave all clips to the right in the same spot

There are two delete keys on Apple’s extended keyboards and they act differently. Using delete on the main part (next to the +/= key) on a chosen clip in FCP 5.1.4 does not do a ripple delete on my system. It merely cuts the chosen clip, nothing else moves. That might be the Backspace key on a pc keyboard, but it’s labeled delete on all four of the Apple keyboards I’m looking at. Using the delete key on the navigation portion of the keyboard (to the left of the End key) does to a ripple delete.

On a non extended keyboard system (My Powerbook for example) the one and only delete key also does not move any other clips.

    Your mileage may vary,
    David

Yes, you are probably right, on my Apple keyboard, the “backspace” delete key is labeled just with a left-pointing arrow.

Delete key above Return (Enter) just deletes, the one above cursor keys ripples. At my computer, anyway.

…and lets be thankful UNDO works the same on both PC and MAC!

    My workflow normally is;
    1. select clip/clips to delete
    2. press delete
    3. utter “oooops!”
    4. select UNDO
    5. press backspace

Its all an automatic response from me now but can be a pain when I am in a real hurry and didn’t notice the ‘ripple’ that may have occured some time back.

    yeah I know… my bad…

    Baz

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!
