History on Premiere Pro versions
Posted by Dave B on June 9, 2005 at 2:01 amCan someone explain the history on Premiere Pro versions? Ver 1.5 follows 6.5 ….seems like newer version should have a higher number? I understand that PPro is a descendant Avid or was as least modeled after its workflow.

June 9, 2005 at 6:51 pmI think Premiere Pro has a number of design changes that are both original and echo the best of several other systems, though I’d say that Avid is at the bottom of that list if it is on it at all.
Most think it seems very FCP-like…I see similarities in DPS Velocity…there has even been a feature or two that I’ve seen first on Pinnacle or Canopus systems (but just because that’s where I saw them first doesn’t mean they started there…)
v6.5 was the last version of regular “Premiere”.
Premiere Pro v1 does write some registry items as “Premiere 7” which was an oversight on somebody’s part…PPro 1.5 and later are proper all the way through. Premiere Pro is such a big change that they decided to start over… Many of us who were asked wanted them to drop the Premiere name altogether.

June 10, 2005 at 12:11 amMy company uses 1.51 exclusively to make international high rating shows. When people ask me what type of Avids I have I say ‘Adobe’. Then they immediately think of the very professional ‘photoshop’ and it goes no further. So I would probably say “Adobe Diva PCF”… Tim?

I LOVE that.
(what’s the “PCF”?)
I kept coming back to “Blade or knife…something”…some sort of editing metaphor, but I think that Adobe was really trying to showcase the “studio” aspect of the software as it does so much more than cut. I also thought maybe “Finish…” or “Feature…” could have figured in somehow. It was so long ago now that I can’t remember what most of the suggestions were.
The problem is that most of us have no idea what names aren’t already protected. Most companies have product names on the shelf that they may not be using but they have them legally tied up. I could make suggestions for a year and they all might be taken…even though they’re not really “visible” anywhere.
How about Adobe Cut n’ Style?

June 10, 2005 at 1:41 amIt was worse when discreet renamed D-Vision Online as “edit”. I told them at the time it was the dumbest name; “I’m going to edit on my edit.” At the end of the beta program for edit 6.0/5, I believe the name was to become Ignite, but alas ’twas not to be. I’ve said it here before but clients used to come to the studio and say, “Nice Avid”, so it probably doesn’t matter these days for most clients.
I think people will get use to the Premiere Pro name, in the same way we got used to Final Cut Pro and it’s use in the broadcast and professional arena. If I had the Matrox Axio, I’d just say I work on “Axio”. But I usually say I work on Premiere just to get a reaction. And two of our Premiere projects won gold medals last week in the national ASC awards, so I don’t really care what people think.
All the Adobe advertising in the world won’t change the perception that PPro is not for pros. What will change it is word-of-mouth from us users who are using Premiere for high-end production work. When that word-of-mouth reaches a certain momentum, the perception battle will be won.

I use PPRo for my professionnal stuff and i think it is very nice! Some feature are really great and PPro can be use for pro works really now.
But…
Adobe has some work to again…. To be reaaaaaallly pro it could be cool to have a real support of edl (i don’t want to open every edl to rename every line to have “clips” to prevent capture all my beta…), adding frames before and after an offline clip easaly, why can’t we import a standard sort of sound file to prevent uniformisation (i understand well the advantage of the principe but if we can prevent some conversions…), FULL OMF!!! please (ok it will desapear, prior to AAF but there is still a lot of meridian avids), Multicam!!! this is really the PRO feature.
hope the version two of the opus will have this and a 10bits video frame render engine support.
Come on adobe guys! NAB has past and no news!! Ppro 1.5 start to be “old” now! (like after 6.5) more than one year has past and where is this V2 beta!
well, i will wait again…
Thanks to all engineer who work hard to allow us to do our crazy jobs!
regards
Oscar

June 11, 2005 at 2:58 am[Tim Kolb] “what’s the “PCF”?”
Well Tim.. its my extreme attempt at humour… as my suggestion of ‘Diva’ is ‘aviD’ reversed ‘PCF’ is ‘FCP’ reversed. So “Adobe Diva PCF” is a combination of the two…. OK… so I am a little crazy…

June 11, 2005 at 10:07 pmThe trouble with most marketing departments is they like to add the word ‘Pro’ – actually not a word – to make something that is used by professionals, appear some how to be professional. Almost as bad as the Acme ‘2000’.
Maybe it’s time for a creative name:
Adobe Twizel ‘n’ Twirl 2000 Pro.
Adobe Finale – well they’ve used Encore and Audition!
Adobe Production Studio – it’s the user that’s ‘Creative’ after all not the app.
