I shot a music video and the hiss is kind of high in the audio. How can I effectively isolate and remove that hiss using Vegas 7? Are there any free VST plugins that will help or can I do it with Vegas alone? Appreciate the help..

you should be able to do it with Vegas alone and get very acceptable results depending of course how bad the hiss is.
I would start with the TRACK EQ-take the #1 and pull it down and to the RIGHT until the either the audio starts to change OR the hiss disappears. Actually at that point I would back off a bit save it and then listen to it and if need be try again to the same take-in other words little bits at a time.
With a bit of playing around and some patience you should be able to take care of the problem-if not we’ll try something else.

well I think the hiss is more on the high end of the frequencies though. All it is is that hiss you hear when you have the volume on a system up, no buzz or powerhum or anything like that, I guess that’s called a hiss?

    Dax,
Hate to tell ya this but removing hiss from a music track is going to
cause artifacts and degrade the quality of the music. There is no simple
solution here. The problem is that music contains a very wide frequency spectrum. Any cuts you make with an equalizer is going to affect your music in that range as well. Most likly cutting deep and wide enough to get rid of the hiss is going to put a big hole in the music track, and at least change the musical balance of the mix.

There are programs (plugins) that are designed to reduce hiss and noises in a audio track. Sometimes they can be affective but they are not one button wonders. You cannot just click one button and automatically get good results. You have to understand how the program works and what kind of noise you are dealing with. You want to make a surgical strike but even with these tools usually you sacrifice something (artifacts).
There are no free rides when doing noise reduction.

Here is a link to a free audio editor program that has noise reduction tools.

Take your time, be careful, and usually the best policy is not to totally reduce the hiss but reduce it to an acceptable level. Let your ears be the judge, and it is very important to monitor changes on a high fidelity speaker system, not computer speakers.

    Regards, Rick.

Thanks for your input and I actually figured out what was causing the hiss so I was able to eliminate it completely. Turns out the guitar volume knob itself was waay too low and wasn’t hardly even moving the meter on the preamp. I had him adjust the volume knob to about 80% and then turned the mixer channel way way down and no more hiss at all, completely gone and left with a crystal clear sound so it turned out just great in the end!
