  • Highlighting a selection of the screen

I am looking to get the effect shown below. I want to highlight part of the screen and have everything else darkened and blurred.

I have attempted to make a shape with the pen but I dont want the selection to be darkened – I want the inverse of the selection to be darkened if that makes sense? Is this possible?

Apologies if this is basic, I am new to Motion I know it is easily possible in after effects. It would be even better if I could do it directly in Final Cut pro x but I work out how this would be done?

    Many Thanks

    Ali

Duplicate your source layer, apply your mask and your darkening effect filter to the upper layer. Then all you need to do is invert your mask – there’s a check-box under Mask Controls.
