Highest quality codec?
I am making a feature combining film, RED and Canon 5d footage. Since this is a NO budget movie(!) I am posting myself on my FCP and using a 2k ProRes444 timeline (transcoding everything to that). At this time I’m assuming I will finish the film this way (using COLOR etc).
My question concerns the 35mm and 16mm neg. I have a telecine facility who are doing me a huge favor and will, and I quote:
“(transfer to) HDcam-SR in 10bit Log RGB 4:4:4. This flat pass will preserve the integrity of your film, by providing a D-min/D-max record, so that you will have the greatest latitude for the final color correction when that time comes.”
They will then digitize to a codec of my choice – using their FCP. My question is what codec shall I ask them to use? The obvious answer would be PR444 of course – but I want to have the highest quality files available just in case I can later afford a proper DI finishing process for my film at a high-end facility, and isn’t ProRes still compressed?
Thankyou,
Nick
