  • High quality blu ray export?

Posted by Gina Miller on March 4, 2014 at 9:52 pm

Hi, I need to export as big of a file size as possible for high quality purposes, however my estimated file size is 3.99? I’d really like to fill up a blu ray as much as possible – your help is appreciated thank you!

If your video isn’t that long, time wise, then the file size will be smaller. Making a bigger file won’t make it better quality. BluRay, like DVD, has a certain compression data rate that it uses. You can’t mess with that…if you do, you risk making it unplayable, as players cannot read the differing data rate.

I know people have messed with DVD data rates, making them higher, and no device could play them back.

    It is what it is.

My video is an hour and 40 minutes with five cam multi tracks, animated intro and specialty credits.

I’d love to get it to fill a double layer, or at least a single.

How are you encoding? Compressor doesn’t encode for BluRay.

I am not encoding through any other program. I am using the export blu ray option in final cut X.

If you’re doing it with FCPX I woldn’t worry about it. It will compress and burn it correctly and the quality is very good.
The estimated file size X shows is not that exact, you will end up with a larger file.

    Shane,

Compressor does encode Blu-Ray. I do it all the time. You must use Toast or Encore to author and burn, but Compressor will do the encoding.

    Actually, Compressor does.

You have to change the “Stream Usage” to Blu-Ray in the pop up under Encoder. I use it all the time to make Blu-Ray compliant MPEGs I then Author in Encore.

Does anybody have Final Cut X blu ray export advice?

If you burn a BluRay from FCPX you won’t be able to adjust quality, but you won’t need to worry about that since FCPX will export the best quality you need and playable for all devices.

If you want to create a BluRay with a more complex menu like in Adobe Encore you can send your timeline to compressor and use the Blu Ray setting. I would leave it as is since Compressor already set to the best setting you need for the final BluRay.
