links are always legal and fine, but referencing material in other people’s documents is not always so unless you at least give a source and better yet check for re-printing permission…

April 12, 2005 at 9:42 amOk curtis the first one is clear abt. links means i can specify any web site link whether it is govt site, or a company site or a forum site like cow righ !
But what abt. the docs which i get on other sites for e.g realnetworks has a set of pdf for the users so can i use that pdf links in my site. On that pdf at the bottom real network has their logo so still its illegal.. (or any PDF file which i want to incorporate in my site has the concern persons/companys logo at the bottom).
thnx.

April 12, 2005 at 2:39 pmI have read some reports where that is not always true. If you put a link like “here’s a great forum site” and link to the cow that’s one thing. But If I were to make a button on my site that said “forums” and inserted your site into a frame on my site, then the cow might be a little ticked off in that it appears I’m claiming the content as my own, and by putting it in a frame I’m also altering the works. Your advertisers may not apprecieate their ad appearing in a frame or an iframe on a porn site for example.
As far as the PDFs go I’d say the same holds true. if you link to “a great document explaining this on the cow site” that would be ok, but if he were to link directly to a pdf on your site like “download the pdf on this info” as if it were his own, that would be a problem.
Mills, something isn’t just copywritten when they put their logo or the copyright mark on it. It’s copywritten the instant you create something in tangible form. This post is now copywritten. But I probably agreed to something or other when I joined this forum I would suppose.
