    Walter B:

In an earlier thread you mentioned you were using a tape format for archiving that was faster than DLT:

“…there’s a new replacement for DLT tape that’s much faster. We’re going to be starting a new series with either the EX-1 or EX-3 and before we even start the edit, all material will be backed up to this format.”

would you, could you, won’t you elaborate please?

    thanx

LTO, I just got off the phone with my VAR and we’re looking at LTO 4 which has up to 800GB cassettes.

LT04 is the fastest for tape backup and restoring. Don’t be tempted to buy an earlier format. LT02 is DOG slow.

I use a Tandberg VXA tape drive. Much cheaper and speeds around 600 Megabytes per minute. Doesn’t have 800 gigs cassettes though

    thanx one and all!!

Itamar, How do you like AVX? Have you done a lot of restores from tape?
    whats your impressions?

It looks impressive, i just worry about “down the road” that the drive will die with no replacement from the manufacturer (happened with me and Onstream) Or the company simply “goes away” and takes all the developer assets with em

I have it since april. The system is very solid. I have done a couple of restores with no issues at all. People tell me that Tandberg is a very solid, top class and reliable manufacturer, that will be there for a long time.
Only thing you have to take into account is that you have to work with a program called Retrospective that comes with the drive. You have to really dig into that program to be able to work with it smoothly. But if you know how to do it, it is also a wonderful way of administrating all your work.
