May 30, 2008 at 11:22 pmThanks. Not sure I quite understand. So…am I correct that you are suggesting I select the clip on the timeline, then type in x, f, Command-J, enter value, F10 and that will adjust the clip speed and not “insert” it, but overwrite it into the timeline? And when you say “enter value” is that the % of speed…or is it the desired length in seconds and frames? Do I need to hold down the cmd button while I type in “x, f, Command-J”?
Sorry if I am being thick, but I am usually more of a mouse click editor than a keyboard shortcut editor, so this is a little foreign to me.

May 31, 2008 at 5:13 amDo not select, just park playhead over the clip. Type x. Do not hold any modifier keys while typing. FCP will set IN to the head of the clip you are parked on and OUT to the tail. Type f. Do not hold any modifier keys while typing. FCP will match frame to the original clip in Browser and load it in Viewer. Hold command and type j. FCP will open speed change dialogue box. Fill in desired percentage of speed, hit Enter. Hit F10.

A few useful FCP technics, obviously”
Here is a useful tip – even in a crappy program like Adobe Premiere you just right click a clip and select speed, enter the value and its done; no rippling timeline, just a new ‘out time’ of the selected clip. Now that is logical to me.
So Michael I accept the fact that there may be many tricks with FCP I am yet to learn as I bounce daily between 5 different editing applications and 3 different pro audio programs but can you tell me how I can apply individual audio track names other than just numbers?
Baz
What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

Thanks. I don’t use mouse while cutting though.
.[Baz Leffler] “how I can apply individual audio track names other than just numbers? “
With a strip of masking tape on your mixer and a marker. If you mean naming audio tracks of the FCP timeline you can’t apply names. You can’t apply numbers either so I think you are talking about some other application.

June 2, 2008 at 5:36 pmNo, Apple does not have many beta testers, they have their own on staff.
Yes, Apple is clever enough to know video requirements.
Shifting clips around unnecessarily? I’ve never seen that. It’s usually operator error.
If you were shocked about FCP moving clips when you changed the speed, you should use the technique described below (match frame/speed change/replace edit). It works just fine.Kevin Monahan
