I have a client that needs to have a vhs promotional tape updated using the film from the vhs. What is the best settings or way to bring it in for the highest quality reproduction? I have canopus and vegas 4. It seems when I get it in to vegas there is distortion on the outside rim of the clip(s) so when I edit and then print to tape the quality loss is quite high. I know there is quality loss when transfering from vhs into vegas when it goes into avi but is there a “best” way for the best quality? Thanks for the help. Michael

You don’t say which Canopus product, but I’ll bet it’s not the ADVC-300 with TBC. The distortion that you describe says that the converter box was receiving a weak analog signal from the VCR. A better VCR would help as would a Time Base Corrector (TBC). Also, use s-video if possible. If you are using the composite or (yecch) RF connector, you are seriously compromising the quality from the beginning.

Thanks for the advice. It’s the ADVC-100. I’ll try S video. Michael

Tried the s-video but it appears s-video out of the unit is only for the dvd part. It is a new vcr / dvd record unit. I also have an older vcr / dvd unit and the back of it says s-video dvd only. Is there a way to do s-video with vcr?

Try putting a mask around the outer edges of the clip to hide the defects.

If you have the Pixelan CreativeEase plugins, then CleanCrop will do wonders for this sort of artifact.

I use a JVC SuperVHS VCR for my transfers. It has s-video out and a built in TBC. JVC VCRs are said to be very good at showing a clean video, so far I have found this to be true.
