  • Help with using FCPX Keyer special effect

I am working in Final Cut Pro-x. I have a clip of a bird flying against a blue sky with some white clouds. I want to use this bird clip as the foreground against other footage of a landscape. I am using the Keyer/green screen effect for this purpose. I am looking for suggestions on how to remove the blue sky and clouds from the bird clip. I am having trouble doing this with the Keyer options. Would it best to try the color inspector corrections to do this, or some other option?

Oh, that’s a tricky one. You’d need one keyed to key out the blue of the sky, and a second keyer to key out the white clouds. The thing that concerns me is that most birds have some white on them. You have to be careful keying out white, because so much of a video frame is also white that you want to keep. I’d also do this in Motion, it handles multiple keyers better than FCPX.

Something else I’d try, is doing all of this in Pixelmator Pro (or Photoshop). It has an intelligent color selector that would make this stuff a breeze. Then just let it process that across the whole video.
