The common plight of every editor: I need more DRIVE SPACE!!!

Anyhow, I was looking at three different ones and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions or experience with any of them. My first initial thought was getting a fire wire drive. I’m working with an AVID Xpress DV 3.5.4 on a Windows XP system.

    1) AVID MediaDrive rS FireWire 250GB Capacity

    2) G-RAID 2-Bay 320GB FireWire 800 External Hard Drive (G-Technology)

    3) LaCie Big Disk Extreme 500GB FireWire 400 and 800

By the way, is the difference between FireWire 400 and 800 data transfer speed?

Thanks in advance for ya’lls help.

Don’t bother with Firewire drives unless you have one of the PCs such as the Compaq, HP, or IBM workstations that are segmented internally into multiple data channels. You cannot use multiple Firewire devices simultaneously in the same section of the PC. You can use one Firewire device on each of 2 Firewire interface cards connected to different segments of the PC.

If you are using a Firewire VTR, it must operate simultaneously with the hard drives to be able to digitize or dump out to tape.

Read the configuration guides for the HP 8000 series or the IBM Intellestation Z Pro on Avid’s web site for a more complete explanation of how this works.
