Posted by Carlos Cidre on May 20, 2009 at 4:18 pmhello everyone and thanks in advance,
ok so a client asked if we could do close caption.. basically embed cc info on a master. our final cut pro is hooked up to a blackmagic decklink extreme sd going to a sony digibeta. is it possible to do this with just this equipment? is there any software i could use? all help would be very valuable and greatly appreciated!Doug Beal replied 16 years, 12 months ago 5 Members · 4 Replies -

Yes, but you need to buy the software to do this:
First you need to make a transcript of the show, then using this software you can make the closed caption file and then add it to the project file.
The other option is to send a transcript to a transcription company that does closed captioning, they give you a file, you take your output and this file to a dub facility that can add CC and they dub the tape, embedding the closed captioning, to a new tape.

May 20, 2009 at 5:26 pmYou also want to keep in mind that some networks prefer captions formatted differently. Be it three line roll up, and what not. You’ll also need to mindful of lower thirds, so as not to have the captions block those.

May 20, 2009 at 7:53 pmWe do it all the time with the same equipment.
We use MacCaption to create the CC file and then add it to the top line of video, crop it to 1 line, render it out and lay it to tape.

May 20, 2009 at 7:56 pmYour equipment is capable. google Closed Captioning Service. contact someone at one of the service bureaus that do this let them know what gear you’re using and they can provide a file you drop on your timeline and output in standard def. I know Aberdeen does this as does Caption Link. you will need to provide a BITC dub of the program they’ll get you the file. much of this can be done redily via email or FTP.
Getting a service to perform this work will get you up to speed quicker on providing a master to your clientDoug Beal
