  • Help with choosing new speakers…

Posted by Shane O’brien on August 8, 2009 at 5:32 pm

I need to buy some new studio monitors to replace the Edirols I had, which are no longer working. I was just going to get some MA-15Ds to replace them, but there is nowhere in the city (er country) that seems to have them in stock.

So I need to get something else. I’m looking for something that is relatively inexpensive. I don’t have a capture card or mixer at the moment, so I would be connecting them directing to the computer (a Mac Pro) – that is, unless I bought a cheap mixer.

Here are the options that are available:

    M-Audio BX5As
    M-Audio AV-40s
    Tascam VLA8s
    KRK Rokit 5
Mackie MR5 (pushing it budget wise)

The KRK’s, while slightly more expensive than the first three, are probably doable. I know they are popular. One thing I don’t like about them, however, is the yellow woofer. As I have the system in my living room, I would prefer simpler black speakers.

If anyone has any advice of which speakers from the selection above, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks.

While I’ve never used them, I’ve read that the KRK Rokit5s are nice. I wouldn’t let the color of the woofers get in the way of your purchase. It’s not like it effects the quality of sound.

If you absolutely don’t want the yella woofers, I’ve heard the M-Audio BX5s and they are nice. I have my own M-Audio DX4s and they are nice too, although they are discontinued…probably replaced by the BX5s

[Rob Grauert] ” I’ve heard the M-Audio BX5s and they are nice. “

I auditioned M-Audio BX5s and KRK Rokit 5s side by side. M-Audio had better dynamic range, so that’s what I own.

Thanks for the input. I think I’ll pickup the BX5As tomorrow. They also are the most readily available here, which makes things easy. Cheers!

KRK Rokit 5’s are what we run in all our suites. Nice flat response and good quality sound.

I’m using the KRK Rockit 8 series. Nice true sound with a lot of detail. Great for anything you need to mix for a large room or live event.

I am still thinking to go with the BX5As over the KRKs… they are a bit cheaper. I actually called the music store this morning. I wanted to know what the best way to connect them would be (I imagine the same would apply to the KRKs). She had said I could get a cable that mini-headphone (1/8) and splits out to the 1/4″ on the speakers? She said one problem, however, can be that it is difficult to control the volume. Is that an issue? Is there a better way to connect them to the computer? I’m connecting them to the Mac Pro directing… Cheers!

If you are simply monitoring your computer’s built-in audio you can use the volume controls on your keyboard. Eventually however, you will want to get a video I/O card which will allow you use balanced audio, and you will want to route through a mixer using 1/4″ to XLR cables. Balanced audio has numerous benefits, such as no RF noise, etc. The M-Audio speakers do have balanced and unbalanced (RCA inputs) on the back. The Mackie 802 is available if you search the Internet for just $200, and is perfect for the job.

    Hi David,
Another option would be to just get a pair of AV40s which are more similar to the Edirols I had. If I can only get unbalanced audio for the time being, is there going to be a great benefit of going with the BX5As over the AV40s?
If there’s not much difference, I would save a fair amount, and then could upgrade the speakers when I get a video i/o card.
    Thanks,
    Shane

At just $250 a pair it seems to make a lot of sense to me get the M-Audio speakers now. You will get to know and trust them, then in no time you’ll be ready for your I/O card and mixer. I like to buy once if it’s affordable the first time.

I have the KRK V8s. Don’t let the color offend you too much. Its like a fine piece of art on the wall, after a little time to get used to it, you only notice it when you want to gaze upon its beauty. 🙂

ps that yellow woofer is kevlar, will stop a bullet if you get crazy clients and you need to protect yourself.
