  • Help- which FCP compressed codec to read in avid session?

Posted by Richard Dee on May 5, 2006 at 3:41 am

I have to send some 720x 486 QT mov’s from FCP over the web for an output to tape on an avid, and I’d like to avoid having

to upload uncompressed 8 or 10 bit files. I’ve had great luck with the pixlet codec (at almost 10:1 compresion)

    – but more than likely this won’t be able to be read by the avid.

so- what compresed codec should I use from FCP that will be able to read on an avid- I’m not sure

what version or even if it’s on mac or PC- it’;s just an output to tape but is being done across

    in another city.

    thanks

Any Quicktime codec will do. Unless you render to the Avid codec the Avid will recompress the movie during import anyway.

Best to use the Avid Quicktime Compressed codec. You will probably find 2:1 or 3:1 compressed will retain decent picture quality and have reduced file size over uncompressed

    download from here..

For best results, export a reference movie from FCP in the codec you edited in, then use Quicktime Pro or Compressor to convert. The Avid Codec can be a bit unstable within FCP, but works fine elsewhere.
