Help, voice over with my camera
Posted by Adam J demientieff on April 18, 2005 at 8:15 amCan I do a voice over with my dv camera via firewire without recording to tape? I would like to have someone talk about a video while it plays without having to record them, capture it and then edit it. Any suggestions?

Well, I can with MY camera, but I know which camera I have.
You might want to tell us which DV camera YOU have. 😉
At any rate,
1) put your camera into Camera (not VCR) mode (don’t put in a tape, so it will stay ON)
2) connect a mic to the camera and set it up for the talent
3) make SURE you have FCP set to: View (menu) > External Video > OFF
4) put the video clip (or edtied sequence) you want to VO into the Canvas
4) Choose: Tools (menu) > Voice Over
5) When you’re ready to go, hit the Red Button on the VO Tool.Make sure you wear headphones for monitoring (and make sure the Mac’s speaker is OFF.)

April 20, 2005 at 6:43 amIt worked! I think my computer was not communicating with my camera because I am using a capture deck. I used the firewire connection from my deck and plugged it into the camera and it worked. Also I had to change the source option on voice over to DV. Thank you for your help. Now I can get to interviewing.

Yes.
FCP can only correctly operate with ONE deck OR one camcorder connected to the Mac via FW at a time.
