  • Help to create a rainbow dancefloor in After Effects!!

Posted by Jack Fielding on March 5, 2009 at 2:58 pm

    Hi everyone,

I want to try and create a rainbow-looking dancefloor, like the one below, but not sure how to do it:

    https://www.londontangoclub.com/dancefloor.jpg

I would like the floor to keep changing colours, randomly even, and allow reflections to be produced on to the people that are standing on it.

I intend to shoot the dancers on green screen, where I will then import them into the scene, in After Effects.

Not sure if this can be simply and effectively done, can anyone help with a simple tutorial or step-by-step screenshots.

    Many thanks!

    Hi Jack,

Well, you could start off with fractal noise on a solid. Turn the complexity right down to 1, then set the noise type to Block. This will give you a matrix of black, white and grey squares.

To make the colours change, add an expression to the evolution property: time*10. The larger the number, the faster the colour change.

You then need to add some colour. Add the colorama effect, then play with the output cycle until you get the effect you want.

As for colour reflection, you might want to try a light spill technique, possibly with a mask over the people layers so that the spill is mostly on their legs.

    Hi Simon,

Thanks for that so much! The disco floor is looking good now, gonna try the colour spill and hopefully all should be good!

    Thanks again!

How how you gonna match the colors that the squares on the floor cast, to the footage of the dancing people ? If a guy is dancing on a green light square he should have some green light casting on him (at least the pants) If not it gonna look really fake.

If you didn’t shoot yet, you better shoot each people separately then you can apply some colored gradient on them to simulate the light that the floor casts.

Maybe my comment is useless cause you already planned to do that or you have a better way to do it, but i’m curious to know how you gonna do that part 🙂

And one more, what camera are you using for the shooting ?
