HELP – SONY BVW-50 Trouble with Final Cut
Posted by Axel Ebermann on March 20, 2006 at 12:03 amHere comes a tough one….
Just got a Sony Beta SP BVW-50 recorder. Whenever I want to edit to tape FCP tells me adjust the pre-roll of the deck.
Only trouble is: I have no idea how to do that.
Any tech-wiz’s out there who can give me a hand ?
Thanks
Axel

March 20, 2006 at 12:26 amSorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that deck will not do an automatic edit to tape. Manual assemble edits only. When FCP is saying to you is to out the deck in record mode (or record-play-pause). FCP will go through the motions and try and record to the deck, but that deck doesn’t work as an editing deck. It’s pretty much a field recorder usually used with a 26-pin run to/from a camera.

March 20, 2006 at 12:31 amJeremy,
Thanks for your post. Are you sure ? My BVW-50 has a sony RS-422 9-pin edit control. I can control the deck from my remote controls on final cut, when I give it an “in” at 00:01:30:00 it will automatically preroll to 00:01:27:00 but then I get a pop up saying “adjust pre-roll settings”

March 20, 2006 at 1:30 amYep, I’m sure. The deck has no control for this. You can control the transport with rs-422, but you cannot do an ‘automatic’ record to tape. It’s kind of like the Panasonic 1200A deck, it also has rs-422 control but cannot do a controlled edit to tape using the serial connection.

March 20, 2006 at 2:03 pmYou can use this deck as a source deck and the RS422 control will work OK

March 20, 2006 at 3:41 pmI know the deck works as a feeder – the million dollar question though – does it work as a recorder in “edit to tape” mode ?

March 21, 2006 at 2:15 amAgain, nope. I’ve tried. My DP wouldn’t believe either, and then he tried. After fighting and sweating with his tried and true, solid workhorse of a BVW-50 and he looked at me and said, “Well, I think you’re right. This won’t work.” And he then he tried his backup BVW-50 and that one didn’t work either. If you find the magic bullet, let me know.
