  • HELP! Problems assigning scratch disc to lacie external drive

Posted by Rebecca Gordon on June 13, 2005 at 9:15 pm

    Hello,

I am trying to digitize about 11 hours of footage for a project. I am running FCP HD on a Dual 2 GHZ power pc G5. I don’t have enough room on the scratch disc to digitize all the tapes – I get a prompt that tells me that there is no more room on the scratch discs after about 7 tape and I have to stop digitizing. In the system settings in FCP – I tried to set the scratch disc to my external Lacie drive which has plenty of room. Everytime I try to set it and begin digitizing and roll tape and hit capture now – the black capture window just hangs and it says searching for drive. I have to do a force quit. I have also tried to drag files from the scratch disc on my computer to a scratch disc folder on my Lacie drive and after it copies a few files I get an error – saying there is an error and I cant copy any more files. ARRRRG!!!! I would greatly appreciate any help on this. Am I doing something wrong in FCP? I’ve tried to set all to the Lacie drive (capture, render, etc…) as well as a combination of the two drives (ex: capture on the Lacie and render, autosave, etc.. on my computer harddrive. Thanks!

You need to make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended. Otherwise it won’t work.

And is it a firewire drive?

    Hello Shane,

It is a firewire drive. How do I find out if it is formatted mac os extended. I use it all the time and save FCP files on there. Thanks!!!

    Hey Shane,

I checked about the Lacie and it is formatted for Macintosh PC exchange (MS-DOS) – I can’t format it differently without loosing all the files on it right? Thanks!!

Right. You will need to copy all the files off of it, use the Disk Utility in the APPLICATIONS>UTILITIES folder to reformat it Mac OS Extended (journalling off or on, doens’t really matter) then copy all the files back. Then it can be used for further digitizing.

How you are going to do that when you are already low on drive space isn’t TOO much of a mystery. Just gonna need another drive. Borrow onw if need be.
