    Hi All,

    I have a question that I’m having trouble finding an answer to so I’m hoping you can help or at least point me in the right direction.

    The situation is this:

    I have an After Effects composition (PC) where I have semi-rough seas against a background photo of a sunset. I decided to use a photo instead of the default sky because it had multiple clouds, sun rays etc…

    Since I’m rendering only the water (so I can use the photo background), the problem is when I use the bobbing platform, the seas move up and down accordingly but my photo background does not. It currently stays static. Is there any way I can use the camera bobbing mechanism to include the .jpg photo background so everything in the comp viewer moves up and down? Any ideas how I can make this work?

    Thank you kindly in advance for any assistance you can provide. I truly appreciate your time.

    Is the bobbing done internally via the plugin with no paramater controls or is there a specific parameter?

    If there is a specific parameter, you can use Expressions to link two properties. Also the background shouldn’t be moving as much as it is supposed to be in the distance.

    So, yes it can be done, but you’ll have to provide more information.

    Cheers

    Hi Rork,

    Thanks for the assist. Yes, there is a single parameter called a bobbing platform (where the camera is supposedly mounted). The higher the number, the heavier the platform and the camera moves less.

    I had a feeling this would come down to expressions. Just not sure what those would be.

    Any more info would be great. Thank you.

    The Interpolation Method for Expression will work but you’ll have to tweak the values quite a bit to get it to look right for your needs.

    Paste the script to the background layer’s position property and amend the script accordingly. Text in italics are specific instructions to follow.

    ———
    //Start Script
    Bobbly=pickwhip to Bob parameter
    MaxBobbly_Y=Bobbly/10;
    MinBobbly_Y=Bobbly/40;
    ease(Bobbly,([value[0],value[1]+MinBobbly_Y]),(value[0],value[1]+MaxBobbly_Y]))
    //End Script

    The script will bob along the y-axis. Hopefully, you can work it out if you need the Expression to also work along the x-axis.

    Change the numbers 10 and 40 to adjust the amount of bobbing for the background layer.

    Rork,

    Thanks again for your assistance. I’ll give it a go. BTW, that’s one hell of an expression. How did you learn such a thing? =)

    Thanks again,

    I actually suck at Expressions. So you’d better go give the script a run out to ascertain its potential before we get all jolly here. 🙂

    BTW, are you the The Anthony Miller that once worked at WSG in Singapore?

    Good Luck

    Wow… if you suck at expressions then boy do I have a lot to learn!

    Anyway, I’m still tweaking it to see if I can get it to work along with X axis as well.

    Again, I do appreciate the assist.

    Oh, I am not the Anthony Miller that worked at WSG in Singapore. However, I’d be willing to go there. =)

    Have a good one!

    From Dan and Filip at the COW’s Expressions Forum is where you can get the really good stuff. Darby is also pretty good. We used to get Marcus coming over but it’s been a while since he’s dropped by. Marcus has a new book on Expressions.

    So lots of good stuff out there and the COW seems to be a common denominator. WOOOOOOTTTTT!!!!!!!!

    Good luck and have fun!
