Help needed choosing a mac!
Posted by Neil Herke on April 29, 2005 at 12:28 pmI need a computer that will be able to deal with a full TV size render of potentially quite a complex 3d scene within after effects (lots of flat layers).
I believe the dual 2.7 G5s are our now. What graphics cards are there that can help previewing/rendering 3d scenes in after effects?
Im coming from a PC background.

April 29, 2005 at 2:01 pmCurrently, AE’s OpenGL implementation is not very good. It doesn’t work nearly as well as OpenGL in a real 3D app, and many users turn it off to avoid errors.
In short, don’t waste your money on a non-out-of-the-box graphics card (for AE) until the next rev of AE comes out.
And nobody knows when that will be (or is under NDA), so please don’t ask. 🙂
However, if you expect to run Apple’s Motion, get the ATI X800 or better. It actually uses OpenGL well with Motion, apparently. But don’t install the card’s new ROM upgrade if you have a dual 2.5 — according to the web, it’ll make your computer unuseable. Can’t speak for the 2.7.

April 29, 2005 at 5:30 pmWell, tell Adobe to make AE node based as well, To offer a GUI that is one unit (like Shake or Combustion), and to fix their trackers and roto to be completely usable, and to use Core Image or someway to use GPU’s well. LOL 🙂
And to please add a usable integrated color corrector and stop using PS tools as the only built in options for Color Correcting. Geesh, Curves and Color balance is not remotely intuitive. And CF is implemented so poorly as a plug-in, it’s too much of a hassle to actualy take advantage of for anything quick.
Okay, I’ll stop ranting 🙂

May 1, 2005 at 3:27 pmHa Ha, maybe so. Except I just can’t ever wrap my brain around it. I spend half my time working with it trying to figure out where my keyframes are and why I can’t see my clip while chasing down where the solid underneath is and getting it back to the right position. But I am mentally challenged it seems 🙂
