  • help needed: capturing stereo material ends up being mono

    Ladies, gentlemen,

I have a serious problem capturing my video material in Vegas 5b. I did a capture test this morning and everything went fine, the audio was stereo 48Khz etc. I then captured the same material again, and since then the audio is mono, and I have found no way what so ever to capture the clips again in stereo. Mind you, I didn’t change any settings prior to this switch from stereo to mono. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

    Thanks a million in advance,

    Barend Jasper

How about some more details. How exactly are you capturing and from what? How are you determining it is mono?

When capturing via firewire, it’s really a file copy from the tape to the hard drive.

    Thanks for your reply,

I shot the material on a Sony DSR-PDX10P, and used it this morning to capture the video material. I just read that there are certain known issues with the PDX10P, so I just upgraded from 5.0d to 6.0b in the hope this would solve the problem. In vain, for all I captured remains mono. Believe me, when I did the test capture this morning they we’re stereo files!
I also tried caprturing the material with a DSR-11, but the problem remains: mono audio. What to do here?

    Thanks in advance,

    Barend

Certain Sony cameras are seen as mono by the Vidcap. It is not the player but the recorder that marks the tape as either mono or stereo. My larger DSR200 was seen by the Sony V5 as mono tape. My solution at the time was to switch to ScceneAlnalyserLive for capture. That software would definately capture in stereo for you.

Is that one of those cameras that captures left on stereo 1 and right on stereo 2? If yes, there’s your problem. Vegas will only see stereo 1. You can use Scenalyzer Live to capture video + stereo 1 into an AVI file while simultaneously capturing stereo 2 into a WAV file.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Sad actually that we should be wasting our time on issues like this, for it’s Sony who should be addressing this problem, not us. I need my time for the ‘creative’ part of filmmaking, not working around technical problems created -or rather not solved- by Sony .
