  • HELP!! Need reliable HD Uncomp 8-bit storage solution…

Posted by Tedjac on September 26, 2006 at 4:41 pm

    Hi all,

I have hit the end of my patience with my current storage attempt. I’ve been TRYING to get a large, fast SATA RAID to work, but it just doesn’t seem to want to happen. I’ve tried EVERYTHING… and I mean EVERYTHING. Unstable with kernel panics all over the place. I’ve tried both the Sonnet card and the CalDigit card… w/16 500Gb Seagate drive in two 8 bay MacGuru towers. Very fast… but very unstable.

So… what are you folks using to capture large amounts of Uncompressed 1080i/60 footage for use in Final Cut Pro?

Is Fibre Channel/XRAID the ONLY truly reliable method?? Is anyone having success with a large fast SATA RAID (over 7TBs)? Has anyone started using a Mac Pro with an XRAID… results??

I’m just at the end of my rope… any success stories would be very much appreciated.

    Ted

Have a look at Huge Systems (Ciprico) 4210. It’s what you need. It’s faster than an XRaid and has RAID 3 protection. It’s not cheap though.

Also, what kind of computer do you have? If it’s a MacPro then Sonnet has not released Universal Drivers for the MacPro yet.

other than SCSI, fibre is about the most reliable solution, Fibre also is the easiest to add to
plug it in, patch into a switch and bingo, you have more storage access.

Most Sata solutions do not support any hardware redundancy for file protection against failure something that is needed when working with this amount of data.
While SATA may be fine for compressed workflows I am uncomfortable recommending SATA solutions ( especially build your own) for Uncompressed HD work at all.

I am currently working with 2 G-speed 4G fibre arrays, and they are hands down faster than everything else I have other the Facilis array (which costs about 3x as much)

Cow news droid just announced CalDigit Mac Pro support with free drivers for existing customers on their web site.
