help moving projects from cutting room to home and back aarhh
ive been using final cut pro for about six months and am loving it. im a professional editor living in london and increasingly im finding with shorter edit schedules that i want to be able to do work at home aswell as in the cutting room and i was hoping that fcp was finally the answer. the problem ive got is this on a friday i use the media tool to copy a sequence from my current master project onto a removable drive to take away and fine cut or tracklay at home on my imac, so far so good when i get home the media and the sequence are there and i spend some very focused time editing away over the weekend. when i come back on monday to the cutting room the new improved sequence relinks with no problems to my master project which is great but here is the problem whilst the media has relinked the original bins from which it came have not. ie when i park my playhead over a shot in the new seq and select reveal master clip(find bin in avid) it cant. ive tried all the media tool options for copying and creating a new project to take home but still no dice with matching back to the original bins when i bring it back to the master project. given that it can reonnect the media with no problems why does it have trouble with the bins? am i doing something wrong? is there a work round or is this just something that fcp cant do because of the way it deals with clips etc.

I think your answer might be to export XML each time you bring it home and back.
If you are working on the same media in both places it won’t care where you put it… only that it’s the same media.
Plus, it will also bring any color corrections etc with it. Now — I’m not sure if this will work for a full project or an individual timeline… but it might be worth a shot.

I would think the easiest thing to do would be to copy your project file and take that one home with you, rather than copying the individual sequences and clips from your bins. Your project file contains all that information anyway. You’d still need to copy all your source media to the drive to take home.
Then when you get home, transfer your project file to your drive where you normally keep your other project files, open it up from there, and reconnect your media.
After you’re done editing at home, and before you head back to the office, save your project file (maybe call it “YourProjectName Version 2” or something like that, so you’ll still have your original on the Mac at work), then transfer the project file back to your work Mac and reconnect the media again.
I’m going to be doing this myself within the next month or two, so I’d be curious if this works, though logically it appears it should. Maybe someone else could confirm this or not?

will xml export media or just code? i dont have the media at home currently thats why i was using media tool to copy onto my removable so if xml exports the media for a sequence aswell as the log info then this may well be the answer for taking just a sequence away which is what i want to do.

No — it’s just code.
But where is your media anyway? Is it ALL on that drive? Where this would be a perfect situation would be if you bought yourself a drive and kept the same media at home as at work. You could even email the xml back and forth.

Your workflow is correct, but match frame only works if everything remains in the same project. For instance, I’ve never been able to match frame to shots if they were logged into a different project. I don’t think XML or anything else is going to help you on this.
