Help: I’m getting faint horizontal lines across the screen…
Posted by Mark Landsburger on July 12, 2005 at 8:22 pmHi all,
I’ve been adding effects to a video project I’m in the middle of, and when I add certain effects (especially ones that change color, levels, etc…) it looks like there are faint horizontal lines across my image. It looks sort of like you screen a piece of writing paper over the image with lines about 3 pixes high.
Has anyone come across this? It’s really screwing up the image.
Thank a MILLION!

July 13, 2005 at 2:19 amSounds like it could be banding… Try changing to 16bpc. You can do this quickly by Option/Alt clicking on the 8bpc button at the bottom of the project window. If this doesn’t help, you can also try adding a little noise. Let us know if we can help some more.

July 13, 2005 at 3:37 amGreat! I was afraid I wouldn’t get a response.
But I’ve never had to change the color space setting, or know much about it. Can you point me to another way to change it because I don’t see that button?
BTW – would I see banding in the preview window before the render? (because I do)
Thanks thanks thanks

July 13, 2005 at 3:53 amTry here: File > Project Settings > Color Depth. Yes you could see banding before the render.

July 13, 2005 at 5:36 amIt didn’t seem to help I’m afraid – but I noticed the the comp setting was set at 29.97fps, and when I changed it to 30fps it improved the lines in SOME of the footage. Any idea what could be going on? I’m spinning…

July 13, 2005 at 6:22 amLooking at the project in Premier, it looks like I see the same lines (although not as noticable I think because of now effects). Premier is where my AE footage is coming from. Is there a similiar setting in Premier?
Thanks again,

July 14, 2005 at 6:39 pmI’ve been struggling with the same problem. It’s most noticeable when doing lightsaber glows for lightsaber clips. I was thinking it may do with how I’m rendering my projects, I’m not sure. If you guys happen to find a way to fix this, it would be great if you left a note or email me at bbplayer459@hotmail.com
Thanks

July 15, 2005 at 1:05 amHello the COW!
OK, so I did the big no-no…I updated my OS and updated Final Cut Pro in the middle of a project. Ugh. I don’t know what happened, but here are the details:
Yesterday(July 13), I was working with some green screen footage exported from FCP to AE, in 16-bit. I was able to get a great key very easily, and there was a noticeable difference between the 8-bit key, and 16-bit key. The 16-bit was MUCH cleaner.
OK, fast forward to today(July 14)… I updated my Mac OS from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2, and updated to FCP 5.0.2. Why? Because I use Automatic Duck plug-ins to Import/Export ftg between FCP and AE, and the Automatic Duck people said that FCP 5.0.2 fixed the bugs that was disabling video preview when using BlackMagic cards. With me so far?
OK, so now when I open up the same project I was working with yesterday, in 16-bit, the footage has weird vertical lines running thru it, but when I switch to 8-bit, the footage looks fine. Here’s a side-by-side comparison | VIEW IMAGE |
I don’t know if the updates have anything to do with this, but that’s the only thing that’s different from yesterday. I can work in 8-bit, but the comp I’m working on looks much better in 16-bit. I can render out all of the green screen ftg(with keys) at 8-bit, then import the keyed clips back into the project, put them into my comp, and then render the full comp at 16-bit. But, WHY is this happening??
Ugh. Any feedback is welcome!!
Thanks!
Jason
