HELP!! I must be missing something!- Pasting motion path always pastes as layer mask.
HI all,
I’m a lottle confused. I’ve watched all of the tutorials.
wanted to draw a curvy line motion path with the pen tool.
started in a solid layer, created path, selected path (alt-click)and copied path.then went to “position” line in my butterfly psd (single layer)and whenever I click to paste (with only “position” highlighted), it always pastes a layer mask on the whole image layer. no coordinates show, no motion created.. nothing.
I recall doing this before very simply, but am I missing something?
I’ve review the video tutorials and previous posts…
It always pastes as a mask, even if I bring it in from illustratorI have a huge school project stuck because if this.
Can anyone help?

You need to go into the mask properties and specifically select the Mask Shape property. Then copy and paste into the position property.
If you select just the mask, the whole mask and all of it’s properties (feather, expansion, etc.) are selected. That’s excess data for a motion path, as all you need is the vector data, which is contained in the Mask Shape property.

That seems to be it. although it’s weird, because on many video tutorials and even in my own past experiences. Somehow I was able to just select the path directly off of the comp window without expanding the menu.
