I’m looking for a little help with smoke.

I’m working up an opening scene where I’ve got a guy emerging from a cloud of smoke walking towards the camera. Problem is, I’ve shot the footage and the smoke cloud is not nearly as big or thick as I want, so……I’m thinking I’ll simply get my BBQ going in the backyard and get a nice big cloud of smoke going which I will film, providing more smoke footage.

I’d like to get some tips on the best way to combine these two seperate sources of footage so that it looks as close as possible like the smoke is all in the original clip.

I’m fairly new to AE so if you have suggestions, please try to “dumb it down” a bit, lol.

    Thanks

Why not use Wondertouch’s ParticleIllusion or Trapcode’s Particular and create your smoke in AE? Much easier to control and check.

If you absolutely must use your BBQ you’ll have several things to think about. First of all is the smoke from your barbie going to be the same kind as the smoke you filmed? Colour, shape, density, texture, speed, etc.
If it’s good enough then you’ll have to film it against a black background with plenty of light shining on the smoke to make it stand out, then screen it over your footage. Or possibly make a luma matte with it. Or possibly… you know what? Try everything.

    I still suggest ParticleIllusion.
