  • Help! FCP suddenly won’t play in sync

Posted by Eugene Reynolds on February 3, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Hi all, I can’t find anything searching the site and I wonder if anyone has any helpful suggestions:

Up until yesterday I had a very stable set-up in use day in day out with no problems:
2×2.8Ghz Quad Intel Xeon MacPro with 8Gb RAM running OS 10.5.8 and FCP 7.01
Media running off a 8 bay ProAvio 4TB RAID via esata
    AJA Kona LH

Suddenly FCP can’t play any sequence or clip in sync with its own audio and my troubleshooting is running out of ideas. The audio is lagging behind picture by a fairly random 4-8 frames.

This problem is evident with recently captured footage or old sequences that I have already successfully delivered. Whatever I play in FCP now fails to play in sync ‘on the run’ but if I step through frame-by-frame it plays each frame’s audio in sync ok. If I play the same clips through Quicktime Player or AJA TV they play in sync absolutely fine. It doesn’t matter what they are – 1080 ProRes from HDCam, HDV captured as ProRes, PAL SD (I am in UK). The problem is the same whether I play media off the RAID or via FW800 GRaid or from an internal Sata drive.

The problem has to be a setting in FCP??

Just to be clear, I have unhooked my PAL monitor, and the problem I am describing is on the computer monitors, so any changes I make to the Frame Offset in Playback control in the FCP System Settings do not change the results. It is left at 0 now.

I have trashed my preferences, torn my hair out, and am desperately seeking fresh ideas.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Eugnene

I run into a similar problem all the time on my system. For me its an issue with my video playout card and its a simple fix. When the audio goes out of sync, i open up System Preferences>Sound. I change the output setting from the Blackmagic Audio to my internal speakers(or any of the other options). I then change it back to playout through the Blackmagic. All media is then back in sync while in FCP.

    Hope that helped.

is there a video reference feed going to either of your systems – sounds like that could be faulty?

    Hi David
What a beautiful result! This worked straight away. Thank you so much, it clearly needed just a little nudge to remind it what it was supposed to be doing. Something I’m not immune from myself.
    Thanks again
