    He,

I have many years experience on Media Composers, Fire, etc. but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to work with NESTS in FCP in a smooth way. What I want to do is very simple:

I have a series of clips on ONE video track that I need t apply a global effect to, in this case, a Sapphire plug-in RIPPLE effect. So I nested the desired clips, fine. Then I dropped the desired filter to the NEST, but how do I adjust this filter? Where is it? How do I remove it or change it?

If I double click the nest (like you would on a normal clip) to access the filters, it opens up the nested sequence, not the filter – which I understand. If I MATCHFRAME on the nest in the original sequence, it does pullup the nested seq and filter in the source window, but I can’t do anything to it that actually effects the video in the nest.

Anyone know how to do this?

    Many thanks!

[Michael Buday] “If I double click the nest (like you would on a normal clip) to access the filters, it opens up the nested sequence, not the filter – which I understand.”

Simply SINGLE click the Nest in the timeline, then hit Return. That brings the nest into the Viewer where you can now make adjustments.

I’m not at my machine right now, and I’m fairly new to FCP also, but if my memory serves me well, right clicking on the clip (nest) and choosing “open in viewer”, (not sure about the wording) will treat it like other clips.

Another thing that will easily hang you up at first, if you need to go into a nest to edit it, fine, double click on it. BUT, if you need to re-use the nest in other sequences as well, it’s real easy to accidently get a copy of that nest that’s no longer related, meaning changing the nest in one sequence, will not change it in another, or even in the browser. This can be very handy, but it can also be a big hangup. There is a way for them to all stay related, but without being in front of my machine, I just can’t remember. Let me know if you want more info, and I’ll respond in front of my machine next time. If you’re not sure this is an issue for you, after applying your filter, open the nest from the browser, into the viewer (again by right clicking on it), and see if the filters are there or not.

    Thanks,
    Gary

Also, option double click will open it in the viewer.

Also, if you just DRAG it right from the timeline back into the Viewer window that works, too.

Many thanks for your reply. It turns out the OPTION and double clicking the NEST does the trick.

I know it’s a bit of a pain, but the first thing I did when I switched from Media 100 was to run the FCP Tutorial which does help greatly in figuring out where the various buttons are and helped me translate some Media 100 functionality to FCP functionality.
