I’ve contacted several FCP users, and they all say the settings I’m using should work. Here’s the settings so far: I’m not mirroring, View, External Video: All Frames, Video Playback: Main, Fullscreen, Raw, I’ve tried them all. I’m at a complete loss.

I’m guessing (you didn’t SAY) that you are feeding the projector via FireWire (I don’t know if such a thing exists, however.)

If this is a DV timeline…
    do this:

Connect a DV unit (camcorder or deck, any kind) to the Mac via FW and establish a connection so that the audio and video from FCP plays on the DV unit.

Then feed the projector from the S-Video from the DV unit (and the audio from the DV unit to where you need it.)

Here’s the configuration: MacBook Pro, playing out of a FCP 5.1.4 timeline. Footage is DV NTSC. I’ve got a Sony projector connected to the DVI output (VGA) of the laptop.

Check the projector settings in the projector menu. Set scanning resolution to 1024X768 or what ever your native resolution is providing the projector has it. Most new projectors do 720P or 1920i HD also. Make sure you have selected DVI as input. Projectors have slower refresh rates than computers so try 75 – 85 mhz.

How would you get a FCP DV timeline to play in real-time out of a computer’s DVI output?

< This is the crucial question, massive misperception. You can't export or play to the projector. All you can do is make the projector into a monitor of the 'book. ONce you have it hooked up properly, you MIGHT be able to do a full screen playback using desktop cinema preview. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    And its a big MIGHT…

If you can’t get it to work (or if it looks “bad”)… just hook it up the way I described earlier.
