Hi all, just finished my first project in FCP and I’m very pleased with it. Big problem though! The project has been done in 16:9, I’ve exported it by keeping the same settings as the project, but the exported file has converted somehow to 4:3!
I’ve tried changing a few of the settings but to no avail and I don’t want to mess around too much without really knowing what I’m doing.
Has anyone please got any suggestions as to why it is doing this, but more importantly how I can export it at 16:9?
I would be eternally grateful as I think my head is about to explode at the moment!
    Thanks
    Simon

If sounds like your footage is probably anamorphic (actually 4:3, but stretched to be 16:9). It’s not a problem, in fact, that’s how most HD formats do it.

So the answer really depends on what you’re going to be doing with the final show. If you’re going to DVD, then you just need to tell DVD Studio Pro that your footage is 16:9 instead of 4:3. If you’re going to web, the you’ll want to compress your final master at a 16:9 aspect ratio, like 640×360. So what are you finishing to?

From one Simon to another (it’s the best damn name ever!)…

Do not worry! It’s simply a pixel aspect ratio thing you’re seeing. To watch the sequence in QuickTime on a computer screen, do the following:

Export your sequence to Compressor, choose your compression, then click on the “Geometry” tab in the inspector window, and choose either the “Dimensions (encoded pixels)” section or the “Output Image Inset (Padding)”, and choose a 16×9 setting.

If you have other delivery requirements (tape, DVD), what are they? It’s an easy fix.

    Cheers!

    Thanks for the advice guys.
I’m exporting to Quicktime Movie so I can import it into DVD Studio Pro to make a menu.
Does that answer your questions? God I hope so!!!

Also, the original video footage is 16:9 if that helps

All you have to do is to select 16×9 Letterbox as the display mode for the menu in DVDSP.

    Cheers!
