help! ev RE20 mic for v/o’s
Posted by Mike Miller on March 26, 2008 at 7:40 pmhello everybody…
i hooked up my electro voice re20 mic into the XLR input #3 on the back of the i/o HD. i’d like to use this mic to record v/o’s. but, when i open the v/o tool, no signal is coming thru from the re20…any advice?
thanks

March 26, 2008 at 8:34 pmthese are line inputs I think you need to use the 1/4″ out to get line level or a mixer. You can get a 1/4″ to XLR cable at most Radio Shacks or Music stores.

the re20, like most dynamic microphones, puts out a signal that is very low (mic level) compared to what the xlr ins on the Io are made for (line level)
in a nut shell, you need a pre amplifier to take your mic level signal and amplify it to line level,
Any audio mixer should perform this task easily (unless its a line level only mixer)
In a pinch I plug mics into the XLR connectors on my camera, and go firewire into FCP, capturing only audio.
hope this helps

the RE20 is an awesome mic. IF you get a good preamp you will get great sound out of it.
