okay, i realize there a million tutorials for creating an animated displacement map,
but i can’t get it to work, been trying for hours. i hoping someone can help me figure this out.

I have a JPG of a flag, i took it into PS created an ALPHA channel, saved as a PSD, took it into AE.

    – applied Displacement map filter to the PSD of the flag.

    – created a grey solid layer, applied fractal noise and used the Curtains, animation preset.

    – went back to the PSD set the displacment map to the solid layer with the curtains animation.
    – used luminence to displace the X and Y.

but i get nothing – the flag is not displaced at all by the solid layer.

what the heck am i doing wrong???
    its driving me crazy.

    thanks,
    steve

I’m thinking you forgot to precompose your layer with fractal noise on it. Precompose that layer with the “move all attributes” button selected. Then reset the displacement map. That should do it. If you don’t understand this process try looking in the help doc’s about “rendering order.”

    Hey colin-

If you go to the AE Podcast here:

    https://www.creativecow.net/aepodcast/

we’ve posted parts 1 & 2 of a 3-part series covering displacement maps, including the issue you were having. Check it out.

    Best regards,

this displacement thing has really got me going. Anyone know how I can make a displacement map that would make it look like you were looking through a drop of water. I tried making a simple oval gradient but the pixels on the left side move the same as the pixels on the right and the distortion is not right

you might just want to try Effects > Distort > Spherize

Spherize won’t do it because of the shape of the drip…

I found this thread using search for advanced displacement

there is some really interesting ideas here that may get me going

i’m also going to look at digital anarchys tools

This makes a pretty quick bead of water.

    Import your background. Dup it.

On a new solid Black layer draw a mask the shape of the liquid drop (round?).
Feather the mask a wee bit.

Precompose the Black solid layer. Then turn off it’s little eyeball (in the original comp).

Add these effects to the top background layer:

    CC Blobbylize
    Blob Layer – 1.Black Solid
    Property – Alpha
    Radial Shadow
Light Source – Move to where you want (upper right?)
    Softness – 10
    Render – Glass Edge

Animate the Mask Shape and Mask Expansion to get flow or change of shape. Adjust effects to taste.

This is from an earlier post by a bloke from Australia who animated drops of rainwater and liquid text, but I couldn’t find the reference, but this is the essence.

yikes… Thanks. that’s a great tip. I dropped radial shadow and I used luminance for bloobyize and a shattered layer with echo and directional blur and levels applied for the source and ended up with an amazing water splashed on the lens effect. I started experimenting with mr mercury to see and then hit on the displacement map idea. blooby worked great.
these plug-ins must be using some kind of displacement internally. Thanks again
