  • Help! Deinterlacing DVCPRO HD 1080i60 in AE

Hey guys.. I am really frustrated and usually don’t ask for help, but I just can’t figure this out!

I shot some DVCPRO HD 1080i60 green screen footage and am preparing to key it in aftereffects.

The footage is obviously interlaced, but I thought there was a trick to turn 60 interlaced frames into 30 progressive.. Does anyone know how to do this in aftereffects? I’ve tried “guess 3:2” pulldown and “guess 24pa pull down” but no luck.

    Anyone?

    thanks so much!!

there are a bunch of plugins that will do this (ie magic bullet) otherwise you can try this technique

    Oh thanks Andrew.

I am very familiar with deinterlacing techniques- however, im not really trying to simply use a plugin.

There is a technique (i’ve used it years ago) to deinterlaced 60i footage by changing the pulldown (i think to 2:3)… making the 60 interlaced framess 30 progressive.

i’ve done this before in after effects, im just no sure how i did it!

    any ideas?

    thanks!

Hmm … not sure I understand. If it was shot 60i, there’s no pulldown to work with, and you need to separate fields or use a plugin like fieldskit or use a method such as Andrew suggested.

If it was shot 24p and recorded with pulldown to give you 60i, then it’s a simple matter of removing pulldown on interpretation.

So. how was it shot? 60i or 24p with pulldown?

I shot it using an hvx, and I believe I shot the whole thing 1080i60..

When I “get info” on a clip in quicktime, this is the format

    DVCPRO HD 1080i60, 1280 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions

    does that help?

How would I separate the fields to get 30 p?

    thanks!

Import the clip, and interpret the footage as lower field first. If AE doesn’t automatically do this, select file>interpret footage>main to access the dialog. When you do this, and drop the footage into a 29.97 comp, AE interpolates motion between the fields when at Best Quality, and doubles the fields when at Draft Quality.

For better quality, use something like Reelsmart FieldsKit. It interpolates the motion more intelligently. You might be also able to use Timewarp to give better interpolation by dropping the footage into a 59.94 comp and selecting 29.97, but I haven’t worked with Timewarp yet.

Really, that about it as far as I know. Each frame consists of two different half-images, neither of which exists as a complete frame. The computer has to invent the missing data somehow, usually by interpolating, hopefully in an intelligent manner.

    Hope that helps …
