  • Help converting MPEG-4 video for XDCAM HD project

Posted by Dan Herz on May 1, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I am working on a project mostly using video with the following specs:

    XDCAM HD 1080i60 (35 Mb/s VBR)
    1440 x 1080 29.97 fps
    4.5 Mb/sec
    Audio – 48.0 KHz 16-bit Integer

I am using the following SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    XDCAM HD 1080i60 (35 Mb/s VBR)
    1440 x 1080 29.97 fps
    Audio – 48.0 KHz 32-bit Floating Point
    field Dominance – Upper (odd)

I have some other footage that needs to be incorporated into the project. When I try to bring it onto the timeline a dialog box comes up saying “Clip does not match sequence or preset settings – do you want to change clip settings?”

The problematic footage is on a portable hard drive and I do not have access to original footage. When I bring clips into the sequence, the render time is very, very long. I will list specs of clips below. Can I convert these clips in compressor or some other way to the correct settings? If so, do I need to put them all on a time line in FCP and then export? Can I keep the clips separated so they are not all lumped together on one timeline?
Thanks for any help you can provide?

    CLIP SETTINGS:

    MPEG-4 Video
    1920 x 1080 29.97 fps
4.8 MB/sec (these numbers are different on every clip)
    Field Dominance – Upper (odd)
    Pixel Aspect – Square
    Audio – 16 bit integer

    H.264 Video
    640 x 480 29.97 fps
157.2 K/sec (these numbers are different on every clip)
    Field Dominance – none
    Pixel Aspect – Square
    Audio – 32-bit Floating point

You should easily be able to convert that in Compressor. You can even choose to keep it in XDCAM or swith it to another codec like ProRes 422. I combine ProRes 422 and XDCAM HD video on the same sequence in FCP all the time.

Keeping them as separate clips will be no problem either. You can find the XDCAM conversion under: Other Workflows>Advanced Format Conversions>High Definition>XDCAM HD 1080i60. You can find the ProRes conversion under: Formats>Quicktime>Apple ProRes 422.

    Hi Dan
Which is your intended delivery format?

    Hi Rafael,
I will deliver a DVD in 16:9 aspect ratio. I also will need to deliver a version on tape that is suitable for television broadcast. I will most likely print to a mini-dv tape in HDV 16:9 and have it dubbed to 50 bit DVC-Pro tape for broadcast.

    Thanks Tim,
I exported to compressor and converted to XDCAM HD…it worked perfectly! Thanks
