HELP – convert AVI to Apple TV MP4 or M4V
I’ve spent hours and hours trying to figure this out, and I’m almost going mad.
I have numerous PAL DV AVI files (720×576 25fps) that are captured as DV AVI from a camcorder, edited and saved as DV AVI. They look good on a DVD (converted to MPEG2) or if I play them as is on my computer. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to convert these to play on my Apple TV (MP4 or M4V) with the highest possible quality. Whatever I do (or software I use) I get very compressed files with a noticable amount of pixellation in some scenes. Can someone tell me the optimum export/encode settings to use in Premiere (or another suitable software)? I don’t care about file sizes or rendering times. I just want the best possible result. Hope someone can help… -

There is no magic preset for all scenarios. Understanding how compression and compression applications work is necessary to get the best results.
Presets are usually a good place to start, but an even better starting point is learning about the subject. There are a number of books on the subject, but one of the best resources is

In the Adobe Media encoder choose H264 as the Format and “Apple Ipod Video Large” as the Preset. Change the “Bitrate Encoding” setting to VBR 2 Pass. Premiere is not as good at this as Procoder or Squeeze.
