I’m trying to capture and am getting the “Capture Encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape…” message. This happens only on certain tapes. Tapes were recorded on Panasonic DVMQ tapes and were shot on and are being captured from a Panasonic DVX100a camera.

I’ve tried the “capture now” with the “uncontrollable deck” option, but it still stops.

    Any suggestions?

Is this always a hardware problem?

Would it help to dub the tapes to another deck?

I don’t have another deck to try right now.

Usually capture issues crop up if you’ve recorded using the camera’s LP mode instead of SP. Since you’re using your aquisition camera as a deck we can probably rule out a head alignment problem. If only some of the tapes are causing you grief we can also rule out a potential software problem such as having to trash FCP’s preference files. The only way to be sure if it’s a tape problem or camera/FCP problem is if you recapture to another camera or deck and then try the dupe tape with FCP. Or try the offending tapes in another camera connected to your computer.

Remember, you can use an inexpensive 1 chip firewire equipped camera as a duplication deck. The transfer won’t have any adverse effect on the tape copy. Do you have any neighbors with a 1 chip camera you can borrow?
